Is air-conditioning required in shelters housing GSM BTS?

Is air-conditioning required in shelters housing GSM BTS?

Dependent upon the operating temperature of the equipment in the shelter and the max. temperature in the region. Another consideration: BBU Battery life can be extended by maintaining the environment.

Indoor BTS units will require an air conditioned space. The electronics can put out enough heat load during busy hours that they will require AC even in colder climates. AC units can be operated more economically by installing an economizer unit that circulates cooler ambient air from the outside when possible instead of engaging the compressor.

Outdoor BTS units usually have their own heat exchangers but are not recommended for indoor (in shelter) use as the ambient air in the shelter will become hotter and hotter.

In general yes, but there are many conditions that need to be considered:
- the BTS brand (different manufacturers support different temperature ranges for different BTS models). For example, Ericsson offers today GSM BTS models that can operate even at +50 C without active cooling required.
- the ambient temperature
- what other equipment is housed together with the BTS in the shelter. For example, the type of batteries used maybe the most important factor, as today's BTSs may operate even at 50 C without a/c but batteries instead usually have much more stringer requirements with regards to temperature, humidity etc. However, there are new, innovative types of batteries that can operate without a/c and are totally recyclable. Ericsson can offer such batteries in conjunction with its products.
In addition, there is a number of solutions available that can minimize or even make obsolete the use of air-conditioning units in
GSM BTS shelters. Indicatively, one can mention: free cooling (which takes advantage of low ambient temperatures at night in order to reduce a/c operation time & end temperature during the day, combination of site temperature remote monitoring and free cooling, geothermal cooling which takes advantage of the rather stable temperature that the soil has at a depth of 3-5 m etc. In addition, one can use alternative sources of energy (photovoltaics, wind generators, fuel cells, hybrid diesel generators/batteries etc.) in order to power both the BTS and other equipment in the shelter (like the a/c). Again, Ericsson has developed a very comprehensive solution porfolio in the area of Energy Efficiency for telecom networks.

Yes. If you are using GSM/DCS/UMTS elements probably your power comsumption is near XX kW, so you must use a Conditioning System with XX+YY kW to maintain internal temperature near 25°C according to manifacturer requests (i.e. operative temperature of equipments, batteries, Flexi, Modems and so on)
Probably you can use a Conditioning / Free Cooling system that can optimize global power consumption. Conditioning when outside Temp is 28/40 °C, free cooling when outside is 10/5 °C, Heat system when above 5°C.

In fact, more vendors (///, NSN, ALU and other) provieds GSM outdoor systems that do not use conditioning equipment for maintain acceptabile temperature, just internal fan and simple circulating air systems.

Aparts for equipment faultness linked to temperature, batteries used to supply BTS during out of service of power line are tipically sensible to high temperature. Their lifecycle can be really reduced if temperature is far from 20°C standard operative status.

My opinion ? : shelter (mini o standard one) must be used just when other Equipment (Radio.Link racks is shelter is a grooming site) need to be hosted inside BTS. Otherwise, outdoor BTS is the best choise (less k€, less space, less problems in realization, some trouble in faultness)
Shelter is "mandatory" when grooming site needs a good performance in authonomy from "power line holes" avoiding "business loss due to traffic loss"
Today quite lazy, english form really bad. Sorry
Cheers
